A good source image and a few practical settings make the converted model easier to print. Use these checks before downloading your JPG to STL file.

Choose a clear, high-contrast JPG

The converter uses pixel brightness as height. Logos, icons, maps, and grayscale photos with clear light and dark areas produce more readable reliefs than low-contrast or heavily compressed images.

Set the relief height for the print

Start with a moderate height, then use the live preview to check detail and edges. A thicker base improves handling, while a smaller height can preserve subtle photographic detail.

Use the base and wall settings

A flat base and sealed side walls turn the heightmap into a solid model rather than a thin surface. This helps the STL load correctly in a slicer and gives the finished print a stable footprint.

Check the preview before exporting

Rotate the model and inspect dark areas, background removal, and inversion. The browser preview updates immediately, so you can correct an image before downloading the final STL.

Open the STL in your slicer

After you convert JPG to STL, open the file in Cura, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, or another slicer to choose scale, orientation, filament, supports, and layer height for your printer.

Know what a relief can show

A JPG to STL conversion maps brightness to front-facing height, so it works best for logos, badges, coins, ornaments, terrain, and portrait reliefs. It does not create hidden sides or a complete 3D figurine from one flat image. For that reason, choose a subject that still makes sense as a raised surface.

How does the JPG to STL converter work?

It reads the brightness of every pixel in your JPG or PNG and turns it into height: bright pixels become tall, dark pixels stay low. Those heights are stitched into a triangle mesh, sealed with a flat base and side walls, and exported as an STL — all in your browser. You can adjust the height, detail, base thickness, and inversion before exporting.

Is it really free?

Do you upload or store my image?

No. Your image never leaves your computer. It's decoded and processed in the browser with the Canvas API, and nothing is sent to or saved on any server. That also means your original JPG stays under your control while you experiment with settings.

What image formats can I use?

PNG, JPG/JPEG, WEBP, GIF and BMP. Grayscale heightmaps and high-contrast logos give the cleanest results. For a photo, choose an image with clear lighting and enough contrast so the relief has visible height changes.

Is the STL ready for 3D printing?

Yes. The model is solid and watertight — it has a flat base and closed side walls, so your slicer treats it as a printable object rather than a thin surface. Always check scale and orientation in your slicer before starting the print.

Can it turn a photo into a full 3D figurine?

No — and that's by design. This tool makes a relief (front-face height), not a full 3D object. For flat subjects like logos, coins and lithophanes that's exactly right, instant and free. Full 3D from a single photo needs AI, which we may add later.

Can I download the converted JPG to STL file?

Yes. After adjusting the relief, download a binary STL and open it in your slicer. You can also export OBJ when you want to continue editing in a 3D program.
